Corporate social responsibility

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not just a jargon phrase – it’s about understanding our business impact on the wider world and considering how we can use this impact in a positive way. It means taking a responsible attitude, and going the extra mile beyond the minimum legal requirements.

Local community and Third Sector support

Alongside providing some free-of-charge or reduced rate accountancy and auditing services for charities, and supporting staff to act as trustees, we support community-based initiatives and charities whenever possible, especially local ones. These have included St Margaret’s Hospice (including main summer ball sponsorship), BIBIC (including ball sponsorship), Vital for Children, Mind in Taunton and West Somerset, St Andrew’s Cricket Club (main club sponsorship), Taunton Indoor Bowls Club (headline sponsorship), Taunton Flower Show (corporate sponsorship), Care Focus Care Awards, Taunton Amateur Operatic Society, Somerset County Cricket Club, and Bacchanale, bringing opera to local rural venues.

We will adopt a principal charity on an annual basis to be drawn from our client base, to be the recipient of BJ DixonWalsh fundraising activities, and will consider other opportunities to support good causes on an ad hoc basis.

As part of our corporate social responsibility and broad commitment to younger people we tend to prefer charities with them as their focus, and are happy to link into initiatives in schools and colleges wherever time and staff resource allows.

We plan to offer some charities the chance to utilise our meeting room facilities on an occasional basis either free of charge or for a reduced rate, and are considering using the grounds for charity events in the future. Organisations should contact us to discuss their ideas or enquire as to the current help and support available.

Young people

Younger people may be the entrepreneurs, SME owners, or indeed major players of the future, and may need to learn the very basics of the importance of bookkeeping and the role accountants play even in small businesses, or supporting sole traders. We aim to explode the myth that accountancy is a boring profession to enter!

Watch this space for our plans to develop our support.

Environmental and sustainability agenda

Staff are encouraged to car-share whenever practical and appropriate; use of local public transport is encouraged; the most timely and appropriate transport methods to appointments off site are considered; staff are actively encouraged to access the bike2work scheme; and we aim to minimise the distance some of our clients need to travel between professionals by opening up opportunities to co-ordinate appointments with different professionals on site.

We encourage responsible recycling, energy efficiency, and aim to increase utilisation of electronic communications whenever practical and appropriate.
